The story of the red door.

Why is the door red? It's a question often asked but Ive never really had the answer. Well until now that is. I recently started on another porch project and it didn't take long of removing the old matchstick pine from the ceiling that I stumbled across something. You need a little backstory here to get the complete picture so here we go... The original cabin was built in 1823 now somewhere between then and 1861 the massive addition was drug by horses and logs to where it sits. It was another Martin home. When it was added they had to match the porch roofs in doing so they cover the original roof, facia and eaves. They sat tucked away till yesterday. The original cedar shingles and original paint color scheme left intact. There will be more of these discoveries as more projects happen but this is very important. I cant explain the amount of different emotions im still going through. You'd think I found buried treasure. I kinda did though. The original Homestead colors were milk paint white obviously but with the red of the front door for trim and such. This was a big mystery as can't tell to much from black and white photos. Beyond excited and happy to be able to share this. This is why I stand by Preserving history for an educated future.

Yours truly,

C. Benbow
